Watch as described. Was purchased as a Christmas gift and the recipiant is very happy with it.

4Good watch, everything works, lasted 4+ years so farOct 06, 2009
I've had this watch for 4-5 years now. All the functions have worked well. Have used the altimeter, barometer and temp functions often and they seem accurate and have worked well. The indiglo light quit working after I had a local jeweller replace the battery, but not a big deal.

The strap has been a weak point for me. The original lasted ~3-4 years, and a replacement ($8 from timex, incl shipping) lasted only 9 months. Just ordered another band.

Overall, a very nice watch and a bargain for the features.

I bought this primarily for the altimeter feature, but I find the altimeter needs constant recalibration which makes it a nuisance!

1Good hardware, weak softwareMay 18, 2009
[Note: this is a revision of an earlier review; I originally thought the altimeter was inaccurate but later discovered that I was wrong.]

This watch has both strengths and weaknesses. The strengths tend to be in the hardware, while the weaknesses are in the software. The bottom line is that it's an OK watch for the price, but if you are serious about sports you should look elsewhere.

On the plus side, the thermometer and altimeter (when calibrated) are both reasonably accurate. I've checked the altimeter against a couple of standards, including Google Maps, GPS, and another altimeter watch, and the results agree within about 20 feet, which is as good as you can expect. I also lucked out and got a unit that keeps very accurate time (it gains less than one second per month).

On the minus side, the display is clunky and badly designed. The main numbers are very large (good for aging eyes) though low-resolution, but the auxiliary indicators such as AM/PM are so tiny that I need a magnifying glass to see them.

Worse, the software inside the watch is full of bugs. Sometimes the reported temperature is absurd (like 890.4 degrees); cycling through modes might or might not correct the problem. The altimeter display gets stuck and won't recover until you leave and re-enter altimeter mode. The accumulated-altitude algorithm seems to be "add half the actual gain or loss", which would produce either total climb (for runners and cyclists) or total descent (for skiers) except that it doesn't do the arithmetic reliably. The mode switching is random (sometimes it goes to the next mode, sometimes straight back to time). Finally, the altitude graph makes no sense whatsoever; I haven't even been able to figure out what the designers thought they were trying to do.

BTW, the strap is nonstandard and is designed so you can't lay the watch flat on a table--a major drawback when you have to remove it to get accurate temperature readings.

Would I buy it again? No. It's a good price, but in the end I got a Casio PAG80-1V, which has its own problems but at least behaves consistently.

1Altimeter WatchMay 11, 2009
I bought this watch because of the Timex reputation and its attractiveness in relationship to most other altimeter watches. The watch is attractive and keeps good time, but the desired altimeter function of elevation gain does not work at all. Very disappointing.
